Continuing a hockey tradition
Imperial and the Esso brand have had a long association with hockey at all levels in Canada – from sponsorship of Hockey Night in Canada that began in 1936, sponsorship of the Canadian men’s and women’s Olympic hockey teams, to our continuing support of minor hockey teams from coast-to-coast.
We are a major sponsor of Hockey Canada, the hockey body overseeing minor hockey in Canada. Through Hockey Canada, we support the Esso Medals and Certificates of Achievement program, which recognizes players for dedication, effort and fair play. To date, nearly two million medals of achievement and over 30 million certificates of participation have been awarded to young boys and girls on behalf of Esso. We also sponsor Esso Fun Day hockey clinics designed to introduce new female athletes to the game. In 2006, more than 800 athletes were involved in the one-day clinics across Canada.
| One of our signature sponsorships continues to be Esso Minor Hockey Week, which is a nine-day celebration held every year in Calgary. In early 2007, we marked the 28th year of our commitment to this event. With 11,500 players on more than 670 teams playing in about 950 games, this event was officially recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest event of its kind in the world.
