| | | Involvement in policy discussions
We work with all levels of government to provide input to public policy development affecting our industry and Canadians. We strive for policy development that emphasizes the importance of sound science, cost-benefit analysis and market-based approaches.
We interact with government either directly or through a range of industry associations, including the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Chemical Producers’ Association, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters and the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute. We also fund public policy think-tanks, including the Fraser Institute, the C.D. Howe Institute, the Canada West Foundation and the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council. In 2006, we invested about $3 million in industry associations and public policy organizations. We register our lobbying activities with the federal government and all provincial jurisdictions requiring this disclosure.
During 2006, we contributed to public policy development on a number of important issues:
> climate change We participated in the federal government’s consultation process for the development of a national climate change plan. We also met with various provincial governments to discuss possible policy measures to address GHG emissions. We supported the need for action that addresses emissions while maintaining Canada’s competitiveness.
> industrial sites The redevelopment of former industrial sites (“brownfield” developments) offers environmental, social and economic benefits by returning land to productive use. However, operating practices and remediation standards from earlier periods can result in properties that do not meet current standards. Imperial and industry are working with governments to establish effective policies to manage this issue in a way that addresses environmental and liability concerns.
> renewable fuels The use of renewable fuels, including ethanol-blended gasolines and biodiesel, is growing in importance. Currently, fuel specifications for renewable fuels vary by province. As a major refiner, we support the development of fuel specification standards that are consistent nationwide. In 2006, we contributed to policy discussions promoting the development of federal standards for renewable fuels. | | | | |
