Biodiversity

We recognize the importance of conserving biodiversity, and address biodiversity concerns in all aspects of our business, from exploration, production, refining and distribution through to marketing and the decommissioning of facilities.

Wildlife management planning

Our Upstream operations can affect different wildlife areas, including foothills, prairie ecosystems and northern muskeg areas. To minimize the impact, wildlife management plans have been developed for all operating areas. The plans identify species of interest or at risk near our operations. We encourage staff to communicate sightings of these species to environment, health and safety professionals to track and manage the impact on wildlife and their habitat.

Environmental surveys for new projects

Another way we address biodiversity issues is through increased levels of protection when planning new projects. Environmental impact assessments are used to identify sensitive wildlife habitat areas and develop mitigation steps for new projects.

Intensive environmental surveys, including traditional land-use studies, have been carried out to ensure we understand biodiversity issues affecting the proposed Kearl oil sands and Mackenzie gas projects. These studies have examined the projects’ potential impact on wildlife, aquatic ecosystems and vegetation. As a result of this work, we have modified our project designs to ensure the final reclamation landscape will provide productive ecosystems.
