Environmental business planning
An important part of our approach to delivering on our environmental commitments is Environmental Business Planning, a management discipline that integrates environmental improvement into business plans and strategies.
Our businesses use this management discipline to identify key environmental priorities, set goals in focus areas and establish multi-year plans to reach these goals. The goals are updated each year, and progress is overseen by senior management through quarterly business performance reviews.
Environmental Business Planning has focused on a number of goals. One is achieving zero regulatory compliance incidents. In addition, the Upstream business has focused on actions to reduce flaring and improve spill prevention. The Downstream and Chemicals businesses also have goals to proactively prevent environmental incidents and continuously reduce environmental emissions and wastes.

Environmental Business Planning resulted in numerous project activities in 2006, including:
> a multi-year project at the Sarnia site to improve water protection
> construction of a new sulphur recovery unit at the Cold Lake operation, and design work at the Sarnia, Nanticoke and Dartmouth refineries to meet future air emission regulations
> environmental leadership training company-wide
