| | | Key highlights in 2008 A look at our achievements and challenges
| Greenhouse gases Emissions down 4% Our strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is focused on increasing energy efficiency in the short term and supporting the long-term development of breakthrough technologies. In 2008, our operations emitted 11 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, down four percent from 2007 levels. Our refineries are 15 percent more energy efficient than they were in 1990, and we are working to increase energy efficiencies across all areas of our businesses. We also continue to be the major sponsor of the Imperial Oil-Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Oil Sands Innovation, where some of Canada’s top researchers are exploring innovative solutions to the challenges of oil sands development, including climate change. In addition, we are partnering with industry to explore opportunities in Canada for carbon capture and sequestration, a promising option for reducing emissions.
| Spills Number increases 65%
| Our goal is to have zero spills to land or water. We are pursuing this in a number of ways, through the training of our people, upgrades to tanks and equipment, and rigorous surveillance of our pipelines. Despite these efforts, the number of spills greater than one barrel in 2008 increased from a record low of 17 in 2007 to 28 in 2008. We are resolved to return performance to best-ever levels. One way we plan to do this is by making spill prevention a greater focus of environmental training programs for managers, supervisors and leaders.

| People More than 360 new hires Our goal is to attract and retain the best-quality people to meet our increasingly competitive business needs. We continuously renew our workforce through the recruitment of talented university and technical graduates as well as experienced professionals. In 2008, we hired 363 people. Of this total, more than 100 were recent university graduates. At the end of 2008, we employed 4,843 people.
