We have an unwavering commitment to responsible operations everywhere we do business. This is embedded in our corporate culture and rigorously carried out through safety, health, environment and security management systems.
| | | | Management framework
The Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) provides the framework for managing safety, health, environmental and security risks in our operations throughout Canada.
OIMS comprises 11 elements that address all aspects of safety, health, environmental and related security management, from project inception to the final shutting down of facilities. The elements, together with supporting standards, provide guidance to ensure every operation has the required resources, skills, systems, procedures and tools to perform safely, securely and with environmental care.
Operational integrity assessments
Under OIMS, every operating unit undergoes a regular cycle of improvement with self-assessments each year and external assessments every three to five years. External assessments are conducted by company experts outside the operating unit being assessed. In each case, opportunities for improvement are identified and addressed, and progress is monitored through regular management reviews. In 2006, 16 operational integrity assessments were conducted at Imperial sites. Seven of these were external.
Leadership development
Imperial works diligently to ensure roles and responsibilities under OIMS are effectively executed. This calls for persistent emphasis on leadership training and development.
| Since 2000, a safety leadership training program has been delivered to more than 900 managers and leaders. An additional 1,100 representatives from contractor companies and safety regulators have also received the training. The program promotes leadership commitment and engagement in achieving our vision of “Nobody Gets Hurt.” Key areas of focus include analytical tools, behavioural science and management techniques for promoting continuous improvement of workplace safety.
We are applying a similar approach to raise environmental awareness throughout the organization. In 2006, more than 160 employee managers and leaders participated in an environmental leadership training program prepared for Upstream operations. The two-day course provides company leaders and operations managers with enhanced understanding, skills and tools to integrate environmental considerations into daily business decisions. A similar training initiative was introduced in the Downstream and Chemicals businesses in late 2006. All leaders in our manufacturing sites are expected to complete the two-day program, which reinforces leadership behaviours to achieve environmental excellence.
