| | | Worker health and well-being
A cornerstone of Imperial’s health and safety programs is preventing and reducing the risk of occupational injury or illness to employees, contractors and others involved in the company’s operations.
Health professionals working from health centres and major operating sites are available to respond to worker health concerns and provide advice to the organization in promoting a safe and healthy workplace. Recent efforts to promote worker health and well-being include:
| Hearing protection program
Worker exposure to hazards and the risk of contracting occupational illnesses are managed through a number of programs. For example, Imperial’s hearing conservation program identifies and reduces noise hazards, tests employees’ hearing and provides protective equipment. In 2006, this program was further enhanced through new signage, hearing protection guidelines and engineering equipment design criteria.
Preventive health programs
We continued to raise health awareness among employees on work and non-work related conditions through health seminars and fairs and the company intranet. Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including nutrition, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, depression and the prevention of repetitive strain injuries. We also offer a physical fitness refund program to employees.
Employee assistance program
Our Employee Assistance Program, a confidential counselling and information program, provides an added service to employees and their families who may be experiencing mental health issues or other concerns affecting their personal well-being. During the year, about eight percent of employees and their families used this service, a rate consistent with other industry employee assistance programs offering similar services.
Preparing for potential pandemic
We are concerned about the health and well-being of our employees and their families, and recognize that our industry plays a critical role in Canada’s energy infrastructure. Building upon work done globally by Exxon Mobil Corporation, an Imperial-wide group developed detailed plans to prepare for and respond to the possibility of a global flu pandemic. In 2007, employee awareness sessions will be held throughout our organization, and desktop simulations will be conducted to test our plans.
