| | Reformulated Esso Protec engine oils improve fuel efficiency. Imperial Oil one of first to adopt a new generation of engine oil quality standards
| Toronto, ON, June 12, 2001
| Imperial Oil has reformulated its high-quality, multi-grade Protec engine oil product lines to provide improved fuel economy and reduce harmful engine deposits to help extend engine life, which can translate into better customer value. Available across Canada May 2001, the reformulated engine oils offer consumers a head start on the latest industry standards to be recognized on July 1, 2001.
Set by vehicle and engine manufacturers and the lubricant industry, International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC) and American Petroleum Institute (API) standards reflect the continual evolution of engine oil requirements. ILSAC GF-3 and API SL are updated versions of ILSAC GF-2 and API SJ quality standards, which have been in place for the last four years. Following
July 1, 2001, ILSAC GF-3 will form the basis of new vehicle warranty requirements.
"Because we work closely with leading North American auto manufacturers, we have a unique understanding of evolving engine oil requirements," says Clinton Smith, Technical Advisor with Imperial Oil's Products and Chemicals Division. "This, combined with our in-depth industry knowledge and expertise, enables us to develop quality lubricant products that exceed the warranty requirements of every major automotive manufacturer."
This new generation of engine oils is Imperial's best quality conventional engine oil manufactured to-date. Esso's conventional engine oils, which include Protec Extra and Protec Ultra product lines, have undergone numerous stringent tests that measure fuel economy, deposit control, volatility and oxidant protection. In addition to more rigorous tests, the new standards include new tests designed to reduce fuel consumption and protect the engine from harmful deposits.
"As one of the world's most trusted brands, Esso continuously strives to be the Canadian leader in providing quality lubricants at a competitive price," says Ellen Falconer, Product Advisor with Imperial Oil's Products and Chemicals Division. "Our newly reformulated engine oils not only exceed industry standards, but also allow customers to select the most cost-efficient oil for their specific needs."
Because Canadian driving habits and conditions vary so greatly, Esso's family of passenger vehicle oils give consumers a choice of three high-quality lubricants to ensure they pay only for the level of protection they need. Protec Extra is the best value oil, offering optimal balance between price and performance; Protec Ultra is a premium engine oil, offering increased protection for hard-working engines; and Superflo Synthetic is a synthetic engine oil that provides the highest level of performance for passenger vehicles and light diesel trucks.
Protec Extra and Superflo Synthetic are available at Esso-branded facilities, associates and at participating mass merchants. Protec Ultra is available exclusively at Esso-branded facilities.
