Aerobatics pilot Bill Carter soars with Imperial Oil at the Nova Scotia International Air Show in Shearwater, Nova Scotia - September 7 and 8, 2002

Shearwater, NS, September 5, 2002
Aerobatics pilot Bill Carter is, once again, bringing high-flying excitement to communities across the country during the 2002 air-show season. With the support of Imperial Oil, Carter will be displaying his piloting skills in air shows across Canada, in Alberta, the North West Territories, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia.

During his performances, Carter keeps spectators breathless from the opening, full-power, half-roll takeoff to his trademark conclusion - an inverted ribbon cut in which he flies at 260 km per hour less than five metres off the ground, shredding a ribbon stretched between two poles 20 metres apart. During his routine, he expertly carries out a number of difficult manoeuvres including tailslides, torque rolls and one of the longest knife-edge passes in the world.

"Performing in air shows such as the one in Shearwater allows me to share my passion for flying with people from across the country," says Carter. "Imperial's long standing support has been an important part of my success," he adds.

Carter flies a factory-built Pitts Special S2B specifically designed for flying in air shows that has been modified to improve its aerobatic and cross-country capabilities. Powered by a custom-built 260 HP Lycoming engine, the plane weighs approximately 765 kg (1,700 lbs.) and has a top speed of 340 km per hour (212 mph). During his 35-year flying career, including his full-time job as a pilot of a Boeing 767 with Air Canada, Carter has accumulated more than 25,000 hours of airtime.

Imperial Oil has been a leading marketer of aviation fuels since 1918 when aviator Ruth Law flew an airplane fuelled with Imperial Premier gasoline in a contest against a racing car at Toronto's Sportsmen's Park. Today, Esso aviation and Avitat locations offer quality aviation fuels and services through a network of conveniently located sites across Canada.
