| Outstanding response from teachers and kids alike result in the expansion of a unique educational initiative!
Esso Shooting For Gold has been embraced by educators across the country. The web-based hockey-themed education program focuses on Team Canada's men's and women's hockey teams as they prepared for last year's successful gold medal wins in Salt Lake City, while adding some fun to the curriculum for students in grades 4, 5 and 6.
Last year, Esso Shooting For Gold was utilized by about 3,000 teachers and 77,000 students in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. With 80% of those teachers stating their intention to use the program again this year, new material has been added and Esso Shooting For Gold is expanding into Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. The program follows provincial curriculum guidelines for Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia.
And the numbers don't tell the whole story. Comments from teachers, such as "Thank you for your efforts. My kids really enjoyed the activities and didn't think of it as 'work'. It was useful for connecting to curricular objectives as well" sent a clear signal to Esso that the program was effective, both for students and teachers.
"At Esso we believe it is important to support the education and development of children," said Karen Fraser, marketing sponsorships manager at Imperial Oil. "Programs like Esso Shooting for Gold supports teachers in helping students reach their educational goals and what better way than to use the story of Canada's great national sport of hockey as the theme."
Over the years the Esso brand has become synonymous with hockey. Esso has been closely linked to Canada's national sport since the 1930s, when it began sponsoring Foster Hewitt's radio broadcasts of Hockey Night in Canada. Since then Esso has been involved in hockey from the grassroots level to the pros, touching Canadians from coast to coast.
