Esso Legends Of Hockey Tour takes hockey memorabilia on the road

Toronto, ON, June 18, 2003
Today at the Hockey Hall of Fame 10th anniversary celebration, the Esso Legends of Hockey Tour, an interactive mobile tour was unveiled. The tour features memorabilia and artifacts from the Hockey Hall of Fame commemorating Legendary Players, Legendary Teams and Legendary Moments. Celebrating a ten year relationship, Esso and the Hockey Hall of Fame  are bringing the sport to the hometowns of the nation's biggest fans.

"We are thrilled to be able to provide this once in a lifetime opportunity to fans in 38 centres across Canada this summer," explains Simon Smith, vice-president of fuels marketing for Imperial Oil. "The Esso Legends of Hockey Tour will bring Hockey Hall of Fame memorabilia right to the doorsteps of hockey fans across Canada."

Over 300 items from the Hockey Hall of Fame will be exhibited in the traveling museum. Among these items will be: Brett Hull's skates (Dallas 1999), Pat Quinn's 2002 Olympic medal and Jacques Plante's prototype 1970s goalie mask. Fourteen display cases will capture themes such as: The Original Six, Wayne Gretzky, Team Canada (Men/Women), Today's NHL Stars and Great Goaltenders.

The interactive tour also features a number of games and activities that will capture the attention of both young and old hockey enthusiasts such as inflatable hockey games, human hockey trivia checkers, goalie mask painting, Nintendo Game Units, Team Canada photo boards, and Bubble Hockey.

Individuals attending the one day event can enter a draw to win an autographed jersey from one of the NHL's greatest players. To further support local hockey, Esso is allocating partial proceeds raised from jersey raffle ticket sales to support minor hockey associations in the community.  The remainder of the funds will support the NHL's "Hockey Fights Cancer" program.

While the love of hockey is nationwide, many Canadians have not had an opportunity to view the memorabilia and artifacts that make the Hockey Hall of Fame so extraordinary. The Esso Legends of Hockey Tour will provide hockey fans with an opportunity to experience and honour the history of the game.  The Esso Legends of Hockey Tour exhibition is free to the public and open to all those who share the love of "the good old hockey game".

Over the years, the Esso brand has become synonymous with hockey.  Esso has been closely linked to Canada's national sport since the 1930s, when it began sponsoring Foster Hewitt's radio broadcasts of Hockey Night in Canada.  Since then, Esso has been involved in hockey from the grassroots level to the pros, touching Canadians from coast to coast.
