Esso and RBC Royal Bank team up to offer Speedpass with debit

Calgary, AB, March 1, 2006
Esso has expanded its Speedpass technology for customers who bank with RBC Royal Bank. The new Speedpass with debit capability will enable RBC Royal Bank Client Card holders to instantly pay for purchases at Esso retail outlets from their RBC account without using their actual card. Esso is the only retail fuels provider in Canada to offer transponder technology for debit cards.

Speedpass with debit is linked to RBC’s Client Card so that customers don’t have to use the actual card to pay. They point the key tag at the pump or in the store, select the account and enter their PIN, and the amount is automatically debited from their chosen account.

"We are excited about this enhancement to our successful Speedpass transponder technology and are pleased to be able to offer Speedpass with debit to RBC Royal Bank Client Card holders. For our credit card customers, Speedpass has been an important part of the Esso retail offer since 2001. To now introduce Speedpass with debit, with all its benefits of convenience, security and rewards, is an example of our continuing commitment to improving our retail offer for Esso customers,” says Simon Smith, VP and General Manager of Fuels Marketing for Imperial Oil Limited. “By joining with RBC Royal Bank, this service will benefit their customers as well as ours.”

Speedpass is a secure way to make a purchase. There is no personal, credit or bank account information stored on the Speedpass key tag. Every time Speedpass with debit customers make a purchase, their PIN is required. Different colored key tags will help customers distinguish between credit and debit – black for credit and blue for the new Speedpass linked to RBC Client Cards.

“This new feature offers our customers another payment option at the pump or in the store. It’s like using our Client Card without the card,” said Doug Collins, VP, Consumer Accounts and Payment Services, RBC Royal Bank. “We’re pleased to be the first Canadian financial institution to offer our customers this safe, convenient method of payment that can help them get on their way as quickly as possible.”

Speedpass can be used at all participating Esso-branded retail stations and On the Run stores across Canada. For more information visit www.speedpass.ca.
