Glenbow Museum is pleased to announce Mr. D’Arcy Levesque and Imperial Oil
Limited as the 2006 winners of the 4th annual Eric L. Harvie - Glenbow Award,
who will be honoured at an exclusive fundraising event at Glenbow Museum on
Thursday, October 12, 2006. Now in its fourth year, Glenbow Museum
established the Eric L. Harvie - Glenbow Award in 2003 to recognize
individuals and institutions who exemplify Glenbow founder Eric Lafferty
Harvie’s legacy and vision, who in 1966 donated his impressive collection to
the people of Alberta. Each year, Glenbow hosts a fundraising gala to present
the awards to the recipients.
“The philanthropic spirit of
Eric Harvie lives on with cultural advocates like D’Arcy Levesque and
organizations such as Imperial Oil,” explains Mike Robinson, Glenbow President
and CEO. “Their contributions in the arts, education and culture help foster a
vibrant community and we congratulate them for continuing to play this vital
role in Calgary and across the country.”
D’Arcy
Levesque, Vice President of Public and Government Affairs for Enbridge Inc.,
has contributed greatly to the visual and performing arts in Alberta and
Canada by not only serving on numerous boards but also by encouraging
corporate industry to understand and appreciate the role that art plays in our
lives. Mr. Levesque currently serves as Chair of the Alberta Ballet Board of
Directors, previously served as Chair for Alberta College of Art and Design
and he’s currently serving as Director of the National Theatre School of
Canada. He has also held Board positions with the Edmonton Art Gallery and
Calgary Opera and served as Founding President, Edmonton Business Council for
the Visual Arts. Mr. Levesque was also instrumental in facilitating Enbridge’s
support of Glenbow Museum’s 2005 spring exhibition, Our River: Journey of the
Bow.
“As an unapologetic and passionate advocate of arts and
culture in our community, I am truly honoured to receive this award,” said
D’Arcy Levesque, Vice President, Public and Government Affairs of Enbridge.
“My fervent hope is that Calgary continues to build on Eric Harvie's legacy
and succeeds in being recognized as an unparalleled creative, cultural
community.”
Imperial Oil Limited, the Eric Harvie –
Glenbow Award’s institutional recipient, has been contributing to communities
across Canada for 126 years since the company’s inception in 1880. Imperial
Oil has been involved with Glenbow Museum since 1980 by supporting many
programming initiatives including programs for the 2002 Glenbow-produced
exhibition, The Group of Seven in Western Canada and Glenbow’s junior
membership program, Bo’s Buddies, in 2004 and 2005. In February 2006, Imperial
Oil announced a major donation to Glenbow Museum consisting of Imperial Oil’s
extensive corporate archives, an endowment for the ongoing care, maintenance
and access of the archival material, and a cash gift towards Glenbow’s new
permanent Mavericks gallery on the history of southern Alberta scheduled to
open in February 2007.
“We are grateful to receive this
honour as Imperial Oil has a long and proud history of supporting the
development and growth of communities across Canada,” said Tim Hearn,
Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Imperial Oil Limited. “We
are delighted to now be part of the Glenbow tradition – an organization that
truly represents Calgary's cultural, educational and historical community.”
Mr. Levesque and Imperial Oil will be honoured at an exclusive fundraising
event and evening of celebration on Thursday, October 12, 2006. This year’s
event invites patrons to ‘MUSEION’ a Greek word meaning “House of the Muses”
where according to ancient Greek myth nine goddesses presided over the arts
and sciences inspiring artists to create new ideas and works. Set in the
ancient Mediterranean with dinner and special presentations of Glenbow’s major
international exhibition, Egypt, Greece and Rome: Art of the Ancient
Mediterranean World, the evening’s guests will continue the Greek custom of
honouring patron deities, as they celebrate the legacy of Glenbow’s founder,
Eric L. Harvie and his tradition of philanthropic and this continued
commitment as demonstrated by Mr. Levesque and Imperial Oil.
The event is expected to raise $225,000 net in support of Glenbow’s
international exhibitions program. Glenbow Museum is one of the most
entrepreneurial museums in Canada generating over 65% of its revenue from
fundraising, sponsorships, memberships, admissions, and other business
activities.
