Fire under control at Sarnia refinery
| Calgary, AB,
December 14, 2006
|
A fire at the Imperial Oil Sarnia refinery is under control. No injuries were
reported and all workers are accounted for.
The fire started
at approximately 3:00 a.m. EST at the refinery’s hydrocracker unit. The
18,000 barrel-a-day unit, which produces components for gasoline, diesel fuel
and lubricant base stock was shut down and depressured while Imperial Oil fire
crews and the City of Sarnia Fire Department brought the fire under control.
All regulatory authorities were notified and the Ministries of Environment and
Labour have been at the site. Air quality monitoring was initiated
immediately after the fire started. All measurements have shown no air
quality concerns.
Routine water-quality monitoring has not
detected any concerns. However, as a precaution, the Eastern Canada Response
Corporation is deploying boom in the St. Clair River.
All
other major units at the 119,000-barrel-a-day refinery continue to operate.
Imperial also operates a refinery in Nanticoke, ON, and steps are being taken
to ensure supply commitments are met. It is too early to assess the impact on
petroleum-product supplies at this time.
Once the fire is
out, an investigation will be undertaken to determine the exact cause.
