The fire which began at the Imperial Oil Sarnia refinery yesterday was fully
extinguished early this morning. While the fire was quickly contained, a
controlled burn was allowed to continue for an extended period to ensure the
facilities were rendered safe.
Imperial's Sarnia refinery
manager, Curt Riley, said, "I want to express my regret to the community for
the incident and the concerns it caused. I'd also like to thank City of Sarnia
fire fighters and the mutual aid network for their excellent support and quick
response. With their help our on-site responders quickly brought the situation
under control without anyone getting hurt."
Investigation of the incident has commenced and damages to the hydrocracker
are being assessed. Otherwise, the rest of the refinery is operating as usual
and employees are back at work.
No product shortages are
expected in the near term as a result of this event; supply will be rebalanced
through the company's refining network as required.
Imperial Oil is one of Canada's largest corporations and a leading member of
the country’s petroleum industry. It is one of Canada's largest producers of
crude oil and natural gas and is also the country's largest refiner and
marketer of petroleum products, sold primarily under the Esso and Mobil brand
names through a coast-to-coast supply network that includes close to 2,000
retail outlets.
