About Imperial Oil

125 years of success

The story began in 1880, when 16 refiners in southwestern Ontario created The Imperial Oil Company, Limited. Since then, the Imperial saga has included Canada's first gas station, the Leduc #1 discovery, hockey's three stars, a tiger in your tank and much, much more.

Imperial Oil has been a major contributor to the growth of the petroleum industry and to Canada's economic and social development for more than 125 years. Imperial's landmark discovery at Leduc, Alberta, was instrumental in the creation of the modern Canadian petroleum industry. The company also pioneered development of the oil sands of Alberta, both through its leadership role in the creation of Syncrude and the development of large-scale in-situ bitumen recovery at Cold Lake.

Through such initiatives, Imperial has grown to become one of the largest producers of crude oil in Canada and a major producer of natural gas, as well as the largest refiner, with a leading market share in petroleum products and a significant presence in the petrochemical industry.

Imperial has operations in every part of Canada and our Esso retail outlets are a familiar part of the Canadian motoring scene. Major concentrations of employees are found at our office locations in Calgary, Toronto and Montreal; as well as refinery and plant locations in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Sarnia and Nanticoke, Ontario; Edmonton and Cold Lake, Alberta.

Imperial has more than 65,000 direct registered and non-registered shareholders, most of whom are resident in Canada. Many others have a stake in the company's share performance through ownership of mutual funds or participation in pension plans that hold shares in the company. The majority shareholder is Exxon Mobil Corporation , which holds 69.6 percent of Imperial's shares.

The company's stock trading symbol is IMO. Our shares are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and admitted to unlisted trading on the American Stock Exchange.

From our successful origins and a long history of achievement, we are well-positioned to see the potential for a prosperous and rewarding future.
