Tips

In case of accident

If you're involved in an accident or witness an accident, there is a standard procedure that all motorists must follow. There are definitely things you must do, but there are also some things that insurance companies and the legal system require you not to do. Follow these steps:
  1. Stop immediately, no matter how small the accident. Turn on four-way flashers, set out flares or reflectors.
  2. Check for immediate danger. (i.e. fuel spills, other traffic accidents)
  3. Ensure that seriously injured parties are cared for. Call an ambulance if necessary.
  4. Call the police.
  5. Notify your employer, who can in turn notify your insurance company.
  6. Find witnesses.
  7. Complete an accident report at the scene.
  8. Take pictures of the scene if possible.
  9. Do not discuss the accident with anyone except the police or a company representative.
  10. Hand in your accident report as soon as possible.

Always co-operate with authorities, and remember:
  1. You are not required to make any admissions to police at the scene or the police station without consulting your lawyer. The law stipulates that you give only your name, address and license number. If requested, you can certify the exact facts of the accident.
  2. You are not required to admit fault, even if you suspect you may be in the wrong.
  3. You are not required to sign anything at the scene for anyone but the police.
  4. You are not required to state whether you are hurt or not. Some injuries aren't immediately apparent. It's best to have the status of any injury determined by a doctor.
