| | Building strong, healthy communities through a broad range of projects
Our desire is to make a difference in those communities where we have a significant employee presence or business interest. Grants are made to programs in the fields of community activities, health, social services and civic causes, as well as to issues of interest to our company. We address local community needs where we operate and where funding is needed.
United Way Imperial recognizes the positive impact of United Way in communities, and is a strong supporter of United Way campaigns across Canada. Each year we are a leading corporate participant in Toronto, Calgary and other centres in terms of dollars raised and volunteer hours. Fifteen percent of the Foundation's contributions in 2006 were designated towards the United Way and Centraide Canada. Donation: almost $3 million in partnership with our employee and annuitant campaigns in 2006.
London Health Sciences Centre
Since 1999, we've been a major corporate sponsor of cancer research programs at the London Health Sciences Centre, one of Canada’s largest acute care teaching hospitals and a leading medical research institution. Our support has allowed researchers to develop a new class of drugs to treat mesothelioma, a form of cancer associated with exposure to asbestos. Foundation Donation: In 2006, $350,000 to support a new research position focusing on cancer metastasis – the development of secondary tumours away from the primary site of cancer and the cause of most cancer deaths.
Giving a hand-up to inner city youth The Foundation has committed $250,000 over five years to expand the Calgary YMCA's achievement program, which provides academic support and work opportunities in the non-profit sector to culturally diverse youth.
Glenbow Museum
Alberta was founded by mavericks – men and women who were adventurous, tenacious and unorthodox. To understand the province, you need only look to its past. More ... Donation: approximately $4 million, which includes Imperial's corporate archives, $1.2 million endowment for ongoing care and a $500,000 gift toward the museum's permanent gallery on the history of southern Alberta.
A symbiotic relationship: employee volunteers on non-profit boards
Imperial encourages its executives to volunteer their time and expertise on the boards of non-profit organizations. Participating on non-profit boards has proven to be mutually beneficial -- it provides a valuable way for employees to learn about communities while providing business skills to the voluntary sector. Imperial executives are serving as boards of directors of non-profit organizations such as Alberta Ecotrust, Junior Achievement of Canada, Let's Talk Science, the Glenbow Museum, the Calgary Zoo, SEEDS Foundation, Frontier College and the Edmonton Art Gallery.
