Strathcona refinery
Telephone
number: (780) 449-8110
Location: North-central
Alberta, on the outskirts of the city of Edmonton, in Strathcona County
History: Construction of the Strathcona refinery was completed in 1976. It
was built on the site of the original 1940s refinery. Over the past 30 years,
the refinery has continued to evolve to meet the demands for quality petroleum
products.
In May 2006, the Strathcona refinery began
producing ultra-low sulphur diesel, reducing its sulphur content by more than
97 percent. The construction of the required facilities took approximately
two years to complete and created work for an estimated 2,000 local
contractors.
Our goal is to operate our facilities safely
and reliably with no injuries or environmental incidents. We work to improve
operating performance through our Operations Integrity Management System
(OIMS). This is a disciplined framework for the management of environment,
health, safety and security activities. Through this framework, progress is
measured, future improvements are planned and management accountability is
ensured. In 2004, Lloyds Register Quality Assurance attested that OIMS meets
all requirements of the ISO 14001 environmental management systems standard.
Our health and safety policies commit us to high operational standards. The
company's goal is "Nobody Gets Hurt." The philosophy is straightforward and
simple - driving all occupational injuries and illnesses to zero. To help
meet this commitment our OIMS framework acts as a robust management system
that addresses safety, health, environment and security requirements.
Strathcona refinery has a quality management system that continuously improves
operational effectiveness. The refinery is proud of its ISO-9001 and TS-16949
registrations.
Imperial is a member of the
Strathcona Industrial Association (SIA). The association, comprised of
industry in Strathcona County and east Edmonton, works with the community and
government to promote a safety and healthy living and working environment.
SIA members operate an ambient air-monitoring network; participate in
emergency preparedness and planning; and increase awareness for industry in
the community through Community Awareness Emergency Response or CAER.
