Nanticoke refinery

Phone number:
(519) 587-7000

Location: On the northern shore of Lake Erie, 40 km southwest of Hamilton, Ont.

History: Nanticoke refinery celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2008. It was built by Texaco Canada at a cost of almost $500 million, and began shipping product on Nov. 17, 1978. Modifications costing $90 million were made in 1987 to improve energy efficiency and increase product recovery. Imperial Oil purchased the refinery in 1989 as part of its merger with Texaco.

Since 2000, Imperial has invested $500 million to reduce sulphur levels in gasoline and diesel fuel.

At Nanticoke, a new gasoline hydrofining unit was completed in 2004 to treat gasoline ingredients from both the Sarnia and Nanticoke refineries. Sarnia streams are shipped to Nanticoke using a pipeline built in 2003. In 2006, new facilities were completed to reduce sulphur in diesel fuel. A second hydrofiner reactor was constructed.

A network of ambient air monitors is maintained by local industry in the Nanticoke area. Monitoring data show that overall air quality is generally very good to excellent. The air monitoring report is available on request from the refinery.

Refinery treated effluent must meet stringent government quality limits. An annual report of water quality performance is available from the refinery on request.

Employees: About 300 employees and approximately 80 regular maintenance contract workers.

Daily capacity: 120,000 barrels of crude oil

Products: Unleaded gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, heavy fuel oil, asphalt, propane and butane

Facilities: Crude distillation; catalytic reforming; catalytic cracking; alkylation; hydrofining; sulphur recovery; product blending, storage and shipping; and wastewater treatment using biological oxidation. The refinery generates $1.3 million in property and business taxes for the County of Haldimand.
