Overview

That’s why we are committed to conducting business in a manner that protects the safety and health of our employees, contractors and the public. We are relentless in our focus on safety because at Imperial, nothing is more important.
What we said we were going to do in 2010
- Continue industry-leading safety record
- Deploy enhancements to the Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) framework
- Improve effectiveness of existing safety tools used by our employees and contractors, including behaviour-based safety systems and hazard recognition processes to lower risk tolerance
- Implement a worker-fatigue management system
- Introduce leading process safety indicators
- Enhance our emergency response preparedness
- Continue to hold safety forums with our contractors to strengthen commitment to the common goal of “Nobody Gets Hurt.”
What we did in 2010
- Employee total recordable incident rate achieved another best-ever performance
- Contractor total recordable incident rate was near best-ever performance
- Implemented improvements to OIMS, consistent with the updated corporate OIMS framework and global functional systems
- Continued to deploy enhancements to behaviour-based safety systems. Developed processes for improving contractor safety performance
- Implemented leading process safety indicators
- Consolidated Upstream and Downstream divisions into one Emergency Support Group system and progressed integration of Imperial Oil with Exxon Mobil Corp. into one North American-wide system for emergency preparedness and response. The new structure gives Imperial quicker access to additional resources in case of an emergency.

What we plan to do in 2011
- Equal or better best-ever performance with goal of achieving zero incidents
- Continue to emphasize hazard recognition and reduce risk tolerance in our workforce
- Expand the use of proven behaviour-based safety tools and processes
- Deploy enhanced safety programs to our contractors
- Evaluate best practises on fatigue management for application at our facilities
- Focus on improving effectiveness of OIMS assessment processes
