Kearl environmental snapshots

Kearl will be developed as a long-life, world-class resource. In developing Kearl, Imperial Oil’s focus is to ensure a safe work culture where nobody gets hurt and developing the project responsibly to protect tomorrow, today.

Kearl will be one of Canada’s largest open-pit oil sands mining operations:

  • 4.6 billion barrels of resource
  • A project lifespan of over 40 years
  • Initial production of about 110,000 bpd before royalties
  • Potential production of up to 345,000 bpd
  • Developed using progressive reclamation, reclaiming land as soon as it becomes available over the life of the project

At our Kearl oil sands project, environmental initiatives that limit our overall impact are in full swing. Watch these short videos to learn how we are acting on our environmental commitments.

Reducing water use at Kearl

River water intake facility and responsible water usage

Kearl will use the latest proven technology to mine bitumen, using the least amount of fresh water as possible. We continually look for new ways to develop our resources responsibly.

Building a compensation lake at Kearl

Compensation lake and stakeholder consultation

Compensation lakes are being built at the Kearl site to replace fish habitat displaced by development. The first lake is well under development and will be deep enough for fish to over-winter in.

Reclamation at Kearl

Progressive reclamation and soil salvage

Land is already being reclaimed at Kearl and the project isn’t operational yet. The Kearl lease will be reclaimed using progressive reclamation, which means land is reclaimed as soon as it becomes available using soil, landforms and vegetation native to the area.
